Brief Intro to SWITCH
Basic principle of membership is based on the spirirt of solidarity. The richer university pay for more. (For those familiar with the South African politics this is what COSATU would insist on i.e. for the richer to pay even more tax).
Once a member the benefits include:
- Getting security services for your network
- Getting access to network
- Getting internet domain
- Getting advice and help on e-based related projects. The umbrella unit for offering this services is called NetServices.
e-based services include: e-learning, e-conferences, e-library, etc.
Lecture Recording
The importance of this was earlier mentioned by Marco. But in a nutshell the benefits include:
- increasing support for students (even for those that wish to opt for ‘elective absence’)
- broader access to learning material
PLAY
PLAY is a platform and I suppose for many of you, you could also literally play on it. (I am making the assumption that you regard your jobs as more of play than work).
PLAY has two versions (1.0 and 2.0). PLAY as platform allows:
- grouping of recordings into channels. The channels may be public, restricted or private
- sysnchronousation of presenter video and slides
- live and on-demand streaming of events
The transition to PLAY 2.0 was a result of many factors:
- Error prone
- Difficult
- Complex setup
- Required assistance from the technical people
PLAY 2.0 Solves many of the above. In addition, it is Ajax-based, and offers better distribution options e.g there is an iPod format and flash format…
To overcome the problem of errors, PLAY 2.0 offers a simple-to-use production tool. Another tool developed to complement PLAY 2.0 is the PLAY recorder. This recorder is a desktop application placed on the production machine. PLAYRecorder offers some of the following benefits:
- semi-automatic lecture/event recording
- robust recovery mechanism
- backup of recorded material
- on-the-fly filtering/cropping of slides
The solution to needed assistance the PLAY 2.0 offers a start-stop-and-enjoy experience. The need for synchronisation hassles are elimininated and all that the assistant may need to do is to press the start button before the start of the lecture and stop at the end.
Note: Tomorrow we will get to play with PLAY
PLAY Requirements
- A mac computer for recording (this comes at a cost of two laptops!)
- Video + other things
